Dumped puppy left for dead makes her rescuers cry with first steps, she’s ‘so happy’

Horrifically, many animals have been thrown, still alive, into dumps, and left for dead. But this puppy had other ideas, even though she was unable to move.

Almost anything might end up in a Florida dumping ground, and that’s where Isabel Zapata found Susanna, a Rottweiler puppy—paralyzed, covered with fleas and ticks, exhausted, and hungry. Luckily, Isabel knew where to turn to for help. She called the Gulfstream Guardian Angels Rottweiler Rescue organization. They quickly agreed to take Susanna in and treat her.

“Animals are just routinely dumped out there to die,” Laurie Kardon of the rescue organization told The Dodo. “It’s a very dangerous place because there are a lot of trucks going through there at high speeds. It’s just heartbreaking. So many don’t make it.”

Isabel, aided by other kindhearted people, lifted the puppy into a truck and took her to an animal hospital. There they found that Susanna was completely paralyzed, and doctors were concerned that she would never be able to walk again.

When Susanna stabilized and regained a little strength, she was transferred to the Clint Moore Animal Hospital for more tests. There they found that her paralysis was psychological due to abuse—of which there was some evidence.

“She had some arthritis and physical deformities to her legs, which make us think she was just stuffed into a crate since puppyhood,” the animal rescuer said. “She was likely in there most of her life and used for breeding. And when breeders are done with dogs, they just dump them.”

The rescue organization and the vet staff were committed to Susanna’s recovery.

“The first time I saw her, she lifted up her head and licked my face,” Laurie recalls. “I said, ‘There it is. This girl wants to live. We were going to do everything in our power to get her going again.’”

It was months before Susanna took her first steps. “We were all in tears,” Laurie remembers. “It was such a relief … She is just so happy … It’s probably for the first time in her life she’s felt this way.”

Laurie and the animal rescuers will take care of her until she’s ready for adoption.

“She’s really a testament to her breed,” Laurie concluded.

“She is strong, determined and brave, but also so sweet and loving,” she added. “She’s got the heart of a Rottweiler, that’s for sure.”
