Dad doesn’t know how to fix daughter’s hair after mom passes—but then, bus driver grabs a comb

Many little girls seek the help of their mom to tie up or braid their hair each morning before going off to school. However, for this 11-year-old girl from Utah, she had no one to turn to after her mother tragically died in 2015 from a rare illness.

Following his wife’s passing, Phillip Pieri has to fill the roles of both mom and dad for his two kids—a son and a daughter.

But there’s one thing he simply can’t handle—styling his 11-year-old daughter’s hair.

“She’d get mad at me for pulling her hair,” Pieri told ABC News. “I didn’t know how to do it.”

To save him from all the hassle, Pieri gave Isabella a crew cut.

But when Isabella’s hair grew back, the girl started fixing it herself.

Each morning, Pieri goes to work early, leaving Isabella to prepare herself for school.

Having no one to style her hair, the young girl opted for a ponytail.

However, the story takes a turn for the better because of one woman, a bus driver, Tracy Dean.

“One day [Isabella] came home and it looked beautiful,” Pieri recalled.

Pieri found out that Isabella sought Dean’s help to braid her hair after seeing the driver doing one of her classmate’s braids.

“I like to think … what if it were my child? How would I want my child to be treated? And go with it,” Dean told Babble.

From that day onward, Dean, who is a mom of four and grandma of six, styles Isabella’s hair almost every morning.

“It makes me feel like she’s a mom pretty much to me,” Isabella told KSL-TV.

And Isabella looks forward to what Dean does to her hair the next day.

“We usually do two French braids first and once in a while she just wants one braid,” Dean said.

Dean’s warm personality has made a positive impact on Isabella.

“I just noticed her head was a little higher that morning, and she had a little more of a step,” said Isabella’s teacher, Mrs. Freeze.

Seeing Isabella’s transformation, Pieri couldn’t be more thankful for Dean’s help.

“Tracy didn’t have to step up, but she stepped up to help out,” Pieri said. “I was amazed.”

Dean, a breast cancer survivor, is grateful to help, though.

“When I go home at night, I look at my own and think how lucky I am that I survived breast cancer. I’m so grateful to be alive for my husband, my children, for my grandchildren. For all the kids I drive to school,” Dean said.

“It’s just the way my mom raised me, to be nice to everyone—people who need a little love in their life,” Dean added.
