Mechanic takes alternate route to work. But when he turns down this road—woman screams for help

A Texas car mechanic decided on taking another route to work one day, perhaps just to change it up a bit. In doing so, he came across a precarious incident, and happened to be at the right place at the right time.

In March, Benny Coronado Rodriguez, of Denton, decided to take a longer route to get to his Swift Tire Shop in Krum. Rodriguez told Denton Record-Chronicle that he had been singing “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton when he saw a man standing on the side of the road in the pouring rain.

He thought the man needed help with his jeep, which was parked by the roadside, but the man directed his attention to a partially submerged SUV.

A woman was screaming for someone to help her.

“I asked if she was OK, and she said, ‘Yes, but I’ve got water inside the car and I’ve got my 2-year-old daughter with me,’” the 31-year-old father of two daughters recalled. “When she told me she had a little girl, in my mind it was my daughters.”

Rodriguez, understanding the urgency of the situation, quickly took action.

“I ran to my truck, grabbed my rope, tied myself and then jumped in the water,” he said.

After he brought them to safety, the paramedics arrived to treat their minor injuries.

Rodriguez later learned from the firefighters that the woman had lost control of the vehicle in the rain.

“The water was high enough that if they were stuck in the car, it could have potentially been a fatal accident,” Denton Fire Captain Luke Ridinger, who supervised the response, said.

Though Rodriguez didn’t get the chance to ask for the woman’s name, he recalls just how grateful she was for his help.

“I told her, ‘God bless you’ and she was crying telling me, ‘God bless you, too,’” he recalled.

Though Rodriguez didn’t have an apparent reason for taking a longer route to work that day, it seems like he took the alternate route to save the lives of the woman and her daughter!
